I then removed trailing white space from math/tgmath.h, support/tst-support-open-dev-null-range.c, and sysdeps/x86_64/multiarch/strlen-vec.S, to work around the following obscure pre-commit check failure diagnostics from Savannah. Alistair Francis	aa706e13f4	Split up endian.h to minimize exposure of BYTE_ORDER. With only two exceptions (sys/types.h and sys/param.h, both of which historically might have defined BYTE_ORDER) the public headers that include <endian.h> only want to be able to test __BYTE_ORDER against ___ENDIAN. This patch creates a new bits/endian.h that can be included by any header that wants to be able to test __BYTE_ORDER and/or __FLOAT_WORD_ORDER against the ___ENDIAN constants, or needs __LONG_LONG_PAIR. It only defines macros in the implementation namespace. The existing bits/endian.h (which could not be included independently of endian.h, and only defines __BYTE_ORDER and maybe __FLOAT_WORD_ORDER) is renamed to bits/endianness.h. I also took the opportunity to canonicalize the form of this header, which we are stuck with having one copy of per architecture. Since they are so short, this means git doesn’t understand that they were renamed from existing headers, sigh. endian.h itself is a nonstandard header and its only remaining use from a standard header is guarded by __USE_MISC, so I dropped the __USE_MISC conditionals from around all of the public-namespace things it defines. (This means, an application that requests strict library conformance but includes endian.h will still see the definition of BYTE_ORDER.) A few changes to specific bits/endian(ness).h variants deserve mention: - sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/ia64/bits/endian.h is moved to sysdeps/ia64/bits/endianness.h. If I remember correctly, ia64 did have selectable endianness, but we have assembly code in sysdeps/ia64 that assumes it’s little-endian, so there is no reason to treat the ia64 endianness.h as linux-specific. - The C-SKY port does not fully support big-endian mode, the compile will error out if __CSKYBE__ is defined. - The PowerPC port had extra logic in its bits/endian.h to detect a broken compiler, which strikes me as unnecessary, so I removed it. - The only files that defined __FLOAT_WORD_ORDER always defined it to the same value as __BYTE_ORDER, so I removed those definitions. The SH bits/endian(ness).h had comments inconsistent with the actual setting of __FLOAT_WORD_ORDER, which I also removed. - I removed copyright boilerplate from the few bits/endian(ness).h headers that had it; these files record a single fact in a fashion dictated by an external spec, so I do not think they are copyrightable. As long as I was changing every copy of ieee754.h in the tree, I noticed that only the MIPS variant includes float.h, because it uses LDBL_MANT_DIG to decide among three different versions of ieee854_long_double. This patch makes it not include float.h when GCC’s intrinsic __LDBL_MANT_DIG__ is available. * string/endian.h: Unconditionally define LITTLE_ENDIAN, BIG_ENDIAN, PDP_ENDIAN, and BYTE_ORDER. Condition byteswapping macros only on !__ASSEMBLER__. Move the definitions of __BIG_ENDIAN, __LITTLE_ENDIAN, __PDP_ENDIAN, __FLOAT_WORD_ORDER, and __LONG_LONG_PAIR to... * string/bits/endian.h: ...this new file, which includes the renamed header bits/endianness.h for the definition of __BYTE_ORDER and possibly __FLOAT_WORD_ORDER. * string/Makefile: Install bits/endianness.h. * include/bits/endian.h: New wrapper. * bits/endian.h: Rename to bits/endianness.h. Add multiple-include guard. Joseph Myers	54412d2061	Use libc_hidden_* for tolower, toupper (bug 15105). Continuing the fixes for localplt test failures with -Os arising from functions not being inlined in that case, this patch fixes such failures for tolower and toupper by using libc_hidden_proto and libc_hidden_def. Zack Weinberg	f0be25b633	Rename xlocale.h to bits/types/__locale_t.h. xlocale.h is already a single-type micro-header, defining struct __locale_struct and the typedefs __locale_t and locale_t. This patch brings it into the bits/types/ scheme: there are now bits/types/__locale_t.h which defines only __locale_struct and __locale_t, and bits/types/locale_t.h which defines locale_t as well as the other two. None of our headers need __locale_t.h, but it appears to me that libstdc++ could make use of it. There are a lot of external uses of xlocale.h, but all the uses I checked had an autoconf test or equivalent for its existence. It has never been available from other C libraries, and it has always contained a comment reading "This file is not standardized, don't rely on it, it can go away without warning" so I think dropping it is pretty safe. I also took the opportunity to clean up comments in various public header files that still talk about the _l interfaces as though they were completely nonstandard. There are a few of them, notably the strtoX_l and wcstoX_l families, that haven't been standardized, but the bulk are in POSIX.1-2008. locale/xlocale.h: Rename to... * locale/bits/types/__locale_t.h: ...here. Adjust commentary. Joseph Myers	2072f5c34e	Remove C++ namespace handling from glibc headers. glibc headers include some code (not particularly consistent or systematic) to put various declarations in C++ namespaces std and __c99, if _GLIBCPP_USE_NAMESPACES is defined. As noted in <https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/libstdc++/2017-03/msg00025.html>, this macro was removed from libstdc++ in 2000. I don't expect compilation with such old versions of libstdc++ to work with current glibc headers anyway (whereas old binaries are expected to stay working with current glibc); this patch (which should be a no-op with any libstdc++ version postdating that removal) removes all this code from the glibc headers. The begin-end-check.pl test, whose comments say it is about checking these namespace macro calls, is also removed. The code in that test would have covered __BEGIN_DECLS / __END_DECLS as well, but if those weren't properly matched it would show up with the check-installed-headers-cxx tests, so I don't think there is an actual use for keeping begin-end-check.pl with the namespace code removed. Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite, and that installed stripped shared libraries are unchanged by the patch). * misc/sys/cdefs.h (__BEGIN_NAMESPACE_STD): Remove macro. Joseph Myers	9d46370ca3	Convert 703 function definitions to prototype style. This automatically-generated patch converts 703 function definitions in glibc from old-style K&R to prototype-style. This conversion is deliberately simplistic, excluding any tricky cases as even a patch covering only simple cases is still very large. Currently excluded are: sysdeps files (to improve test coverage for the initial patch); files containing assertions (to avoid line number changes so that generated libraries can be compared); any cases where the generated function declaration would involve lines over 79 characters and so need to be wrapped; any cases with array parameters or other cases where parameter declarators don't end with the parameter name; any other cases that my script didn't parse. I didn't try to make the ChangeLog generation indicate when function definitions are conditional; it just lists the functions changed without regard to that. Joseph Myers	b8986484e4	Fix isblank / isascii / toascii namespace (bug 17635). Use of isblank brings in isascii and toascii, but isblank is a C99 function and the other two aren't; similarly, isascii and toascii are UNIX98 functions and bring in isblank, which isn't. (Not a conformance issue because of the is* and to* reservation, but still contrary to glibc practice.) This patch fixes this by splitting isblank out of ctype-extn.c to a separate ctype-c99.c. isblank_l is also moved to a separate file, ctype-c99_l.c (non-XSI POSIX.1-2008 has isblank_l, but isascii / toascii are marked OB XSI). (In principle all these functions could go in separate files - that's optimal for static linking - but they are also all very small, and splitting them all out is not needed to fix the present bug.) Tested for x86_64 (testsuite, and that installed stripped shared libraries are unchanged by the patch - the ordering in which new and existing sources are listed in ctype/Makefile is arranged so functions go in the same order so that this comparison works). In <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2014-01/msg00196.html> I noted it was necessary to add includes of Makeconfig early in various subdirectory makefiles for the tests-special variable settings added by that patch to be conditional on configuration information. No-one commented on the general question there of whether Makeconfig should always be included immediately after the definition of subdir. This patch implements that early inclusion of Makeconfig in each directory (which is a lot easier than consistent placement of includes of Rules). Includes are added if needed, or moved up if already present. Subdirectory "all:" targets are removed, since Makeconfig provides one. There is potential for further cleanups I haven't done. Rules and Makerules have code such as ifneq "$(findstring env,$(origin headers))" "" headers := endif to override to empty any value of various variables that came from the environment. I think there is a case for Makeconfig setting all the subdirectory variables (other than subdir) to empty to ensure no outside value is going to take effect if a subdirectory fails to define a variable. (A list of such variables, possibly out of date and incomplete, is in manual/maint.texi.) Rules and Makerules would give errors if Makeconfig hadn't already been included, instead of including it themselves. The special code to override values coming from the environment would then be obsolete and could be removed. This patch cleans up following the obsoletion of _BSD_SOURCE and _SVID_SOURCE by combining __USE_BSD and __USE_SVID into __USE_MISC. The only non-mechanical part of this patch is the changes to features.h; everything else is simple substitution of __USE_MISC for the old macros. Thus, this patch leaves obviously redundant conditionals such as "defined __USE_MISC \|\| defined __USE_MISC", and does not update #endif comments where they referred to BSD or SVID in words instead of the literal macro name. This is intended to facilitate patch review by separating the less mechanical changes from these purely mechanical changes into a separate patch. (I do intend to integrate all the changes from <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2013-12/msg00226.html>, which I believe includes all the trailing comment updates, in subsequent patches.)
