Alan Modra	fd67aa1129	Update year range in copyright notice of binutils files Adds two new external authors to etc/update-copyright.py to cover bfd/ax_tls.m4, and adds gprofng to dirs handled automatically, then updates copyright messages as follows: 1) Update cgen/utils.scm emitted copyrights. 2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external author I haven't committed, 'Kalray SA.', to cover gas testsuite files (which should have their copyright message removed). 3) Build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes. 4) Check out /po/.pot which we don't update frequently.	2 years ago
Jan Beulich	67694446f7	bfd: correct relocation handling for objcopy COFF -> ELF While documented to not be reliable, it is still odd for objcopy to silently produce bad output when converting COFF/PE object files to ELF ones. The issue there is that relocation addends all are screwed up by subtracting the symbol's section offset. In the COFF/PE world, to my knowledge, section contents stores the addends alone, not the result of symbol value plus addend. Hence the compensation talked about in a comment ahead of the sole use site of CALC_ADDEND() may need to account for the VMA (which is always zero for object files anyway), but not for the symbol value. The coff-sh.c adjustment is based upon guessing that behavior there is the same. Note also how coff-aarch64.c short-circuits CALC_ADDEND() altogether, which may suggest that a much simpler macro might do for the COFF_WITH_PE case in the three arch-specific files touched here. For (at least) Arm/WinCE this actually results in more appropriate objdump output as well, as can be seen in the one testcase which has its expectations adjusted (the generated binary doesn't change).	3 years ago

Alan Modra	57698478b7	Don't encode reloc.size I expect the encoded reloc.size field originally came from aout r_length ecoding, but somehow went wrong for 64-bit relocs (which should have been encoded as 3). Toss all that out, just use a byte size instead. The changes outside of reloc.c in this patch should make the code independent of how reloc.size is encoded. * reloc.c (struct reloc_howto_struct): Increase size field by one bit. Comment. (HOWTO_RSIZE): Don't encode size. (bfd_get_reloc_size): Adjust, and make it an inline function. (read_reloc, write_reloc): Adjust. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate. * aout-ns32k.c: Include libbfd.h. Alan Modra	c94cb02662	HOWTO size encoding This changes the HOWTO macro to encode the howto.size field from a value given in bytes. This of course requires editing all target uses of HOWTO, a major pain, but makes it a little nicer to specify new target HOWTOs. The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit breaks building of bfp opcodes files.	4 years ago

H.J. Lu	d1bcae833b	ELF: Don't generate unused section symbols For ELF targets, section symbols are required only for relocations. With -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections, there can be many unused section symbols. Sizes of libstdc++.a on Linux/x86-64 in GCC 11 are With unused section symbols : 39411698 bytes Without unused section symbols: 39227002 bytes The unused section symbols in libstdc++.a occupy more than 180 KB. Add BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED to indicate if a section symbol should be included in the symbol table. The BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED should be set if the section symbol is used for relocation or the section symbol is always included in the symbol table. Add keep_unused_section_symbols to bfd_target to indicate if unused section symbols should be kept. If TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS is defined as FALSE, unused ection symbols will be removed. Tested on Linux/x86. Other ELF backends need to: 1. Define TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS to FALSE. 2. Mark used section symbols in assembler backend. 3. Tamar Christina	251dae9107	x86: Add i386 PE big-object support The 64-bit version of binutils got support for the PE COFF BIG OBJ format a couple of years ago. The BIG OBJ format is a slightly different COFF format which extends the size of the number of section field in the header from a uint16_t to a uint32_t and so greatly increases the number of sections allowed. However the 32-bit version of bfd never got support for this. The GHC Haskell compiler generates a great deal of symbols due to it's use of -ffunction-sections and -fdata-sections. This meant that we could not build the 32-bit version of the GHC Compiler for many releases now as binutils didn't have this support. Recent patches to djgpp by Stas Sergeev (CC'd) have pushed the stub right up to this limit, so if any further expansion is desired, this must first be patched in bfd. This series includes three patches: The first changes the meaning of the bfd->origin field slightly, so that target code can use this to specify an offset into the file where the actual bfd is located. The second patch then uses this to enable support for variable-sized stubs in the coff-go32-exe format. I think it's better to default to passing the section to bfd_octets_per_byte, even in cases where we know it won't make a difference. A number of the coff reloc functions used bfd_octets_per_byte wrongly, not factoring it into the offset into the data buffer. As it happens, the targets using those files always had bfd_octets_per_byte equal to one, so there wasn't any detectable wrong behaviour. However, it is wrong in the source and might cause trouble for anyone creating a new target.
