Tom Tromey	86b442599b	Handle block-local names for Ada GNAT can generate a mangled name with "B_N" (where N is a number) in the middle, like "hello__B_1__fourth.0". This is used for names local to a block. Multiple levels of block-local name can also occur, a possibility that was neglected by v1 of this patch. This patch changes gdb to handle these names. The wild name matcher is updated a straightforward way. The full matcher is rewritten. The hash function is updated to ensure that this works. This version does not seem to have the performance problems that affected v1. Andrew Burgess	c9debfb97e	gdb: Convert language la_get_symbol_name_matcher field to a method This commit changes the language_data::la_get_symbol_name_matcher function pointer member variable into a member function of language_defn. There should be no user visible changes after this commit. Before this commit access to the la_get_symbol_name_matcher function pointer was through the get_symbol_name_matcher function, which looked something like this (is pseudo-code): <return-type> get_symbol_name_matcher (language_defn lang, <other args>) { if (current_language == ada) current_language->la_get_symbol_name_matcher (<other args>); else lang->la_get_symbol_name_matcher (<other args>); } In this commit I moved the get_symbol_name_matcher as a non-virtual function in the language_defn base class, I then add a new virtual method that is only used from within get_symbol_name_matcher, this can then be overridden by specific languages as needed. Christian Biesinger	c1b5c1ebc9	Use an accessor function for general_symbol_info::language Also renames the member variable to m_language to make code easier to read when more functions become member functions. Tom Tromey	0d12e84cfc	Don't include gdbarch.h from defs.h I touched symtab.h and was surprised to see how many files were rebuilt. I looked into it a bit, and found that defs.h includes gdbarch.h, which in turn includes many things. gdbarch.h is only needed by a minority ofthe files in gdb, so this patch removes the include from defs.h and updates the fallout. I did "wc -l" on the files in build/gdb/.deps; this patch reduces the line count from 139935 to 137030; so there are definitely future build-time savings here. Note that while I configured with --enable-targets=all, it's possible that some -nat.c file needs an update. I could not test all of these. Tom Tromey	bde09ab702	Remove "struct" from foreach statements Some versions of gcc have a bug that causes for (struct mumble : something) ... to give a compiler error. We routinely work around this bug in gdb, but apparently had not done so in a while. Keith Seitz	c7748ee9ce	gdb/23712: Introduce multidictionary's gdb/23712 is a new manifestation of the now-infamous (at least to me) symtab/23010 assertion failure (DICT_LANGUAGE == SYMBOL_LANGAUGE). An example of the problem (using test case from symtab/23010): Reading symbols from /home/rdiez/rdiez/arduino/JtagDue/BuildOutput/JtagDue-obj-release/firmware.elf...done. (gdb) p SysTick_Handler dwarf2read.c:9715: internal-error: void dw2_add_symbol_to_list(symbol, pending): Assertion `(listhead) == NULL \|\| (SYMBOL_LANGUAGE ((listhead)->symbol[0]) == SYMBOL_LANGUAGE (symbol))' failed. A problem internal to GDB has been detected, further debugging may prove unreliable. Quit this debugging session? (y or n) This assertion was added specifically to catch this condition (of adding symbols of different languages to a single pending list). The problems we're now seeing on systems utilizing DWARF debugging seem to be caused by the use of LTO, which adds a CU with an artificial DIE of language C99 which references DIEs in other CUs of language C++. Thus, we create a dictionary containing symbols of C99 but end up stuffing C++ symbols into it, and the dw2_add_symbol_to_list triggers. The approach taken here to fix this is to introduce multi-language dictionaries to "replace" the standard, single-language dictionaries used today. Note to reviewers: This patch introduces some temporary functions to aide with review. This and other artifacts (such as "See dictionary.h" which appear incorrect) will all be valid at the end of the series. This first patch introduces the new multidictionary and its API (which is, by design, identical to the old dictionary interface). It also mutates dict_create_hashed and dict_create_linear so that they take a std::vector instead of the usual struct pending linked list. This will be needed later on. This patch does /not/ actually enable multidictionary's. That is left for a subsequent patch in the series. I've done exhaustive performance testing with this approach, and I've attempted to minimize the overhead for the (overwhelmingly) most common one-language scenario. On average, a -g3 -O0 GDB (the one we developers use) will see approximately a 4% slowdown when initially reading symbols. [I've tested only GDB and firefox with -readnow.] When using -O2, this difference shrinks to ~0.5%. Since a number of runs with these patches actually run /faster/ than unpatched GDB, I conclude that these tests have at least a 0.5% error margin. On our own gdb.perf test suite, again, results appear to be pretty negligible. Differences to unpatched GDB range from -7.8% (yes, patched version is again faster than unpatched) to 27%. All tests lying outside "negligible," such as the 27% slowdown, involve a total run time of 0.0007 (or less) with smaller numbers of CUs/DSOs (usually 10 or 100). In all cases, the follow-up tests with more CUs/DSOs is never more than 3% difference to the baseline, unpatched GDB. Ada's wild matching basically means that "(gdb) break foo" will find all methods named "foo" in all packages. Translating to C++, it's roughly the same as saying that "break klass::method" sets breakpoints on all "klass::method" methods of all classes, no matter the namespace. A following patch will teach GDB about fullname vs wild matching for C++ too. This patch is preparatory work to get there. Another idea here is to do symbol name matching based on the symbol language's algorithm. I.e., avoid dependency on current language set. This allows for example doing (gdb) b foo::bar< int > (<tab> and having gdb name match the C++ symbols correctly even if the current language is C or Assembly (or Rust, or Ada, or ...), which can easily happen if you step into an Assembly/C runtime library frame. By encapsulating all the information related to a lookup name in a class, we can also cache hash computation for a given language in the lookup name object, to avoid recomputing it over and over. Similarly, because we don't really know upfront which languages the lookup name will be matched against, for each language we store the lookup name transformed into a search name. E.g., for C++, that means demangling the name. But for Ada, it means encoding the name. This actually forces us to centralize all the different lookup name encoding in a central place, resulting in clearer code, IMO. See e.g., the new ada_lookup_name_info class. The lookup name -> symbol search name computation is also done only once per language. The old language->la_get_symbol_name_cmp / symbol_name_cmp_ftype are generalized to work with both completion, and normal symbol look up. At some point early on, I had separate completion vs non-completion language vector entry points, but a single method ends up being better IMO for simplifying things -- the more we merge the completion / non-completion name lookup code paths, the less changes for bugs causing completion vs normal lookup finding different symbols. The ada-lex.l change is necessary because when doing (gdb) p <UpperCase> then the name that is passed to write_ write_var_or_type -> ada_lookup_symbol_list misses the "<>", i.e., it's just "UpperCase", and we end up doing a wild match against "UpperCase" lowercased by ada_lookup_name_info's constructor. I.e., "uppercase" wouldn't ever match "UpperCase", and the symbol lookup fails. This wouldn't cause any regression in the testsuite, but I added a new test that would pass before the patch and fail after, if it weren't for that fix. This is latent bug that happens to go unnoticed because that particular path was inconsistent with the rest of Ada symbol lookup by not lowercasing the lookup name. Ada's symbol_completion_add is deleted, replaced by using common code's completion_list_add_name. To make the latter work for Ada, we needed to add a new output parameter, because Ada wants to return back a custom completion candidates that are not the symbol name. With this patch, minimal symbol demangled name hashing is made consistent with regular symbol hashing. I.e., it now goes via the language vector's search_name_hash method too, as I had suggested in a previous patch. dw2_expand_symtabs_matching / .gdb_index symbol names were a challenge. The problem is that we have no way to telling what is the language of each symbol name found in the index, until we expand the corresponding full symbol, which is off course what we're trying to avoid. Language information is simply not considered in the index format... Since the symbol name hashing and comparison routines are per-language, we now have a problem. The patch sorts this out by matching each name against all languages. This is inneficient, and indeed slows down completion several times. Pedro Alves	5ffa079369	Per-language symbol name hashing algorithm Currently, we have a mess of symbol name hashing/comparison routines. There's msymbol_hash for mangled names, and dict_hash and msymbol_hash_iw for demangled names. Then there's strcmp_iw, strcmp_iw_ordered and Ada's full_match/wild_match, which all have to agree with the hashing routines. That's why dict_hash is really about Ada names. From the inconsistency department, minimal symbol hashing doesn't go via dict_hash, so Ada's wild matching can't ever work with minimal symbols. This patch starts fixing this, by doing two things: #1 - adds a language vector method to let each language decide how to compute a symbol name hash. #2 - makes dictionaries know the language of the symbols they hold, and then use the dictionaries language to decide which hashing method to use. For now, this is just scaffolding, since all languages install the default method. The series will make C++ install its own hashing method later on, and will add per-language symbol name comparison routines too. Simon Marchi	224c3ddb89	Add casts to memory allocation related calls Most allocation functions (if not all) return a void* pointing to the allocated memory. In C++, we need to add an explicit cast when assigning the result to a pointer to another type (which is the case more often than not). The content of this patch is taken from Pedro's branch, from commit "(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++". I validated that the changes make sense and manually reflowed the code to make it respect the coding style. I also found multiple places where I could use XNEW/XNEWVEC/XRESIZEVEC/etc. Thanks a lot to whoever did that automated script to insert casts, doing it completely by hand would have taken a ridiculous amount of time. Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified. This means that all other -nat.c files are untouched and will have to be dealt with later by using appropiate compilers. Or maybe we can try to build them with a regular g++ just to know where to add casts, I don't know. I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested. Simon Marchi	8d7493201c	Replace some xmalloc-family functions with XNEW-family ones This patch is part of the make-gdb-buildable-in-C++ effort. The idea is to change some calls to the xmalloc family of functions to calls to the equivalents in the XNEW family. This avoids adding an explicit cast, so it keeps the code a bit more readable. Some of them also map relatively well to a C++ equivalent (XNEW (struct foo) -> new foo), so it will be possible to do scripted replacements if needed. I only changed calls that were obviously allocating memory for one or multiple "objects". (y or [n]) n What happens here is that the compiler generates two symbols: (a) Symbol `pck__dummy_task' which is a variable referencing the task; (b) Symbol `pck__dummy_taskTKB' which is the subprogram implementing the body of the task. The symbol lookup only finds the variable before of the TKB suffix in the subprogram name. This patch fixes the problem by adjusting the ada-lang.c:is_name_suffix routine to recognize "TKB" suffixes. But that's not enough, because the search in the symtab is performed via the block dictionary, using a hashing algorithm. So, for the search to find `pck__dummy_taskTKB', I had to modify the hashing function to ignore TKB suffixes as well. gdb/ChangeLog: * ada-lang.c (is_name_suffix): Add handling of "TKB" suffixes. Paul N. Hilfinger	1d2a4540a5	Correct dict_hash to our most recent version. Several changes to dict_hash from Adacore's local version were inadvertantly left out of the last change to that function. These changes conservatively cause dict_hash to revert to msymbol_hash_iw in more cases where the symbol being hashed is known not to be Ada-encoded. This avoids a few cases where the function hashes large groups of names with similar prefixes to the same value. Paul N. Hilfinger	c4d840bdd6	Extend hashed symbol dictionaries to work with Ada This patch allows Ada to speed up symbol lookup by using the facilities in dictionary.[ch] for hashed lookups. First, we generalize dictionary search to allow clients to specify any matching function compatible with the hashing function. Next, we modify the hashing algorithm so that symbols that wild-match a name hash to the same value. Finally, we modify Ada symbol lookup to use these facilities. Because this patch touches on a hashing algorithm used by other languages, I took the precaution of doing a speed test on a list of about 12000 identifiers (repeatedly inserting all of them into a table and then doing a lookup on a million names at random, thus testing the speed of the hashing algorithm and how well it distributed names). There was actually a slight speedup, probably as a result of open- coding some of the tests in msymbol_hash_iw. By design, the revised hashing algorithm produces the same results as the original on most "normal" C identifiers. We considered augmenting the dictionary interface still further by allowing different hashing algorithms for different dictionaries, based on the (supposed) language of the symbols in that dictionary. While this produced better isolation of the changes to Ada programs, the additional flexibility also complicated the dictionary interface. I'd prefer to keep things simple for now.
