Nick Alcock	094e34f221	binutils, ld: work with --disable-libctf This unfortunately means conditionalizing out all the libctf code, but the result is not too unbearably ugly, if a bit repetitive. I have stubbed out code in the !ENABLE_LIBCTF path to avoid extra redundant ifdefs where it seems that might be helpful. (The stubs are not too disruptive, but I've tried to keep them on one line where possible to avoid filling up the screen with stubs that nobody would care about. If this is too much of a coding style violation I can change it.) Aaron Merey	301a9420d9	Add support for debuginfod to the binutils (disable by default, enabled via a configure time option). debuginfod is a lightweight web service that indexes ELF/DWARF debugging resources by build-id and serves them over HTTP. This patch enables objdump and readelf to query debuginfod servers when they are otherwise not able to find separate debug files. Binutils can be built with debuginfod using the --with-debuginfod configure option. This requires that libdebuginfod be installed and found at configure time. debuginfod is packaged with elfutils, starting with version 0.178. Simon Marchi	d0ac1c4488	Bump to autoconf 2.69 and automake 1.15.1 When trying to run the update-gnulib.sh script in gdb, I get this: Error: Wrong automake version (Unescaped left brace in regex is deprecated, passed through in regex; marked by <-- HERE in m/\${ <-- HERE ([^ =:+{}]+)}/ at /opt/automake/1.11.1/bin/automake line 4113.), we need 1.11.1. Aborting. Apparently, it's an issue with a regex in automake that triggers a warning starting with Perl 5.22. It has been fixed in automake 1.15.1. So I think it's a good excuse to bump the versions of autoconf and automake used in the gnulib import. And to avoid requiring multiple builds of autoconf/automake, it was suggested that we bump the required version of those tools for all binutils-gdb. For autoconf, the 2.69 version is universally available, so it's an easy choice. For automake, different distros and distro versions have different automake versions. But 1.15.1 seems to be the most readily available as a package. In any case, it's easy to build it from source. I removed the version checks from AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS and AC_PREREQ, because I don't think they are useful in our case. They only specify a lower bound for the acceptable version of automake/autoconf. That's useful if you let the user choose the version of the tool they want to use, but want to set a minimum version (because you use a feature that was introduced in that version). In our case, we force people to use a specific version anyway. For the autoconf version, we have the check in config/override.m4 that enforces the version we want. It will be one less thing to update next time we change autotools version. I hit a few categories of problems that required some changes. They are described below along with the chosen solutions. Problem 1: configure.ac:17: warning: AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE: two- and three-arguments forms are deprecated. For more info, see: configure.ac:17: http://www.gnu.org/software/automake/manual/automake.html#Modernize-AM_005fINIT_005fAUTOMAKE-invocation Solution 1: Adjust the code based on the example at that URL. Nick Clifton	7fac9594c4	In response to a public outcry the strings program now defaults to using the --all option which displays text from anywhere in the input file(s). The default used to be --data, which only displays text from loadable data sections, but this requires the use of the BFD library. Since the BFD library almost certainly still contains buffer overrun and/or memory corruption bugs, and since the strings program is often used to examine malicious code, it was decided that the --data option option represents a possible security risk. * strings.c: Add new command line option --data to only scan the initialized, loadable data secions of binaries. Choose the default behaviour of --all or --data based upon a configure option. * doc/binutils.texi (strings): Update documentation. Include description of why the --data option might be unsafe. * configure.ac: Add new option --disable-default-strings-all which restores the old behaviour of strings using --data by default. I started down that path then decided it was more work than I was interested in doing. Mike Frysinger	c4dd807e7b	bfd: update to AC_INIT Move the package name/version from AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE to AC_INIT per recent autotools guidelines. We use recent versions of both, so it shouldn't be a problem. This sets PACKAGE_xxx variables correctly, and makes the output of: ./configure --version actually useful: bfd configure 2.22.52 Changing the other dirs to use AC_INIT would require a bit of m4 trickery that I don't feel like getting into, and they all use BFD_VERSION anyways, so there isn't much point.
