Alan Modra	b95830931f	Regenerate with automake-1.15.1 Until we update the recommended versions of autoconf/automake, files should be regenerated with automake-1.15.1 and autoconf-2.69. That's not because we think those versions are golden, and newer versions are bad. It's simply because maintainers want to be able to update configury files without trouble, and if someone regenerates files with automake-1.16.5 then --enable-maintainer-mode builds will hit errors: checking that generated files are newer than configure... configure.ac:26: error: version mismatch. This is Automake 1.15.1, configure.ac:26: but the definition used by this AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE configure.ac:26: comes from Automake 1.16.5. You should recreate configure.ac:26: aclocal.m4 with aclocal and run automake again. WARNING: 'automake-1.15' is probably too old. Correcting this requires regenerating the files by hand.	4 years ago

Nick Alcock	caf606c90d	libtool.m4: fix the NM="/nm/over/here -B/option/with/path" case My previous nm patch handled all cases but one -- if the user set NM in the environment to a path which contained an option, libtool's nm detection tries to run nm against a copy of nm with the options in it: e.g. if NM was set to "nm --blargle", and nm was found in /usr/bin, the test would try to run "/usr/bin/nm --blargle /usr/bin/nm --blargle". This is unlikely to be desirable: in this case we should run "/usr/bin/nm --blargle /usr/bin/nm". Furthermore, as part of this nm has to detect when the passed-in $NM contains a path, and in that case avoid doing a path search itself. This too was thrown off if an option contained something that looked like a path, e.g. NM="nm -B../prev-gcc"; libtool then tries to run "nm -B../prev-gcc nm" which rarely works well (and indeed it looks to see whether that nm exists, finds it doesn't, and wrongly concludes that nm -p or whatever does not work). Fix all of these by clipping all options (defined as everything including and after the first " -") before deciding whether nm contains a path (but not using the clipped value for anything else), and then removing all options from the path-modified nm before looking to see whether that nm existed. NM=my-nm now does a path search and runs e.g. /usr/bin/my-nm -B /usr/bin/my-nm NM=/usr/bin/my-nm now avoids a path search and runs e.g. /usr/bin/my-nm -B /usr/bin/my-nm NM="my-nm -p../wombat" now does a path search and runs e.g. /usr/bin/my-nm -p../wombat -B /usr/bin/my-nm NM="../prev-binutils/new-nm -B../prev-gcc" now avoids a path search: ../prev-binutils/my-nm -B../prev-gcc -B ../prev-binutils/my-nm This seems to be all combinations, including those used by GCC bootstrap (which, before this commit, fails to bootstrap when configured --with-build-config=bootstrap-lto, because the lto plugin is now using --export-symbols-regex, which requires libtool to find a working nm, while also using -B../prev-gcc to point at the lto plugin associated with the GCC just built.) Regenerate all affected configure scripts. * libtool.m4 (LT_PATH_NM): Handle user-specified NM with options, including options containing paths.	4 years ago

Andrew Burgess	9f1528a1bd	Merge changes from GCC for the config/ directory GCC's config/ChangeLog since the last time this merge was done (in the binutils-gdb commit `0b4d000cc4`) is included at the end of this commit message. It is worth noting that the binutils-gdb commit `301a9420d9` added the file config/debuginfod.m4 which is not present in GCC's config/ directory. This file is preserved, unmodified, after this commit. In order to regenerate all of the configure files, I configured with --enable-maintainer-mode, and built the 'all' target. I then did the same thing on a source tree without this patch, and only committed those files that changed when this patch was added. Simon Marchi	d0ac1c4488	Bump to autoconf 2.69 and automake 1.15.1 When trying to run the update-gnulib.sh script in gdb, I get this: Error: Wrong automake version (Unescaped left brace in regex is deprecated, passed through in regex; marked by <-- HERE in m/\${ <-- HERE ([^ =:+{}]+)}/ at /opt/automake/1.11.1/bin/automake line 4113.), we need 1.11.1. Aborting. Apparently, it's an issue with a regex in automake that triggers a warning starting with Perl 5.22. It has been fixed in automake 1.15.1. So I think it's a good excuse to bump the versions of autoconf and automake used in the gnulib import. And to avoid requiring multiple builds of autoconf/automake, it was suggested that we bump the required version of those tools for all binutils-gdb. For autoconf, the 2.69 version is universally available, so it's an easy choice. For automake, different distros and distro versions have different automake versions. But 1.15.1 seems to be the most readily available as a package. In any case, it's easy to build it from source. I removed the version checks from AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS and AC_PREREQ, because I don't think they are useful in our case. They only specify a lower bound for the acceptable version of automake/autoconf. That's useful if you let the user choose the version of the tool they want to use, but want to set a minimum version (because you use a feature that was introduced in that version). In our case, we force people to use a specific version anyway. For the autoconf version, we have the check in config/override.m4 that enforces the version we want. It will be one less thing to update next time we change autotools version. I hit a few categories of problems that required some changes. They are described below along with the chosen solutions. Problem 1: configure.ac:17: warning: AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE: two- and three-arguments forms are deprecated. For more info, see: configure.ac:17: http://www.gnu.org/software/automake/manual/automake.html#Modernize-AM_005fINIT_005fAUTOMAKE-invocation Solution 1: Adjust the code based on the example at that URL. For now, the corresponding output automake: object file(s) will be placed in the top-level directory. However, automake: this behaviour will change in future Automake versions: they will automake: unconditionally cause object files to be placed in the same subdirectory automake: of the corresponding sources. automake: You are advised to start using 'subdir-objects' option throughout your automake: project, to avoid future incompatibilities. Solution 8: Use subdir-objects, that means adjusting references to some .o that will now be in config/.
