ld: Initial DT_RELR support
Add a -z pack-relative-relocs option to enable DT_RELR and create a relr.dyn section for DT_RELR. DT_RELR is implemented with the linker relaxation infrastructure, but it doesn't require the --relax option enabled. -z pack-relative-relocs implies -z combreloc. -z nocombreloc implies -z nopack-relative-relocs. -z pack-relative-relocs is chosen over the similar option in lld, --pack-dyn-relocs=relr, to implement a glibc binary lockout mechanism with a special glibc version symbol, to avoid random crashes of DT_RELR binaries with the existing glibc binaries. bfd/ * elf-bfd.h (elf_link_hash_table): Add srelrdyn. * elflink.c (_bfd_elf_link_create_dynamic_sections): Create a .relr.dyn section for DT_RELR. include/ * bfdlink.h (bfd_link_info): Add enable_dt_relr. ld/ * News: Mention -z pack-relative-relocs and -z nopack-relative-relocs. * ld.texi: Document -z pack-relative-relocs and -z nopack-relative-relocs. * ldelf.c (ldelf_after_parse): Disable DT_RELR if not building PIE nor shared library. On Linux/x86, when -static is passed to gcc, gcc passes it to linker before all input files suitable for creating static executable. Automatic makefile dependencies for generated ld/e*.c
This patch modifies genscripts.sh to emit dependency info along with the generated emulation e*.c files. This is done by a new source_sh function that records its arg to a file (.deps/e*.Tc), using the function whenever a shell script is sourced. Entries in the file are made unique and written to .deps/e*.Pc. These files are then included by the Makefile. * Makefile.am (GENSCRIPTS): Pass LIB_PATH as a parameter. Add DEPDIR parameter. ELF: Call check_relocs after opening all inputs
For all ELF targers, call check_relocs after opening all inputs and
garbage collection. Since the symbol resolution is known, check_relocs
can be simplified. Also garbage collection doesn't need to undo what
check_relocs has done for symbols which have been garbage collected.
Since ELF targets never see the removed sections, gc_sweep_hook can be
removed from elf_backend_data and we can avoid GOT/PLT with garbage
collection now.
Set link_info.check_relocs_after_open_input to TRUE for all linker
targets which use ELF linker and update garbage collection tests to
remove unused GOT section.
ldemul_after_check_relocs is added for powerpc to support --secure-plt,
--bss-plt and --sdata-got.
Tested natively without regressions on i686, x86-64 and x32. Tested
cross binutils on x86-64 without regressions for aarch64-linux,
alpha-linux, arm-linux, bfin-elf, cr16-elf, cris-elf, crx-elf, frv-linux,
hppa64-linux, hppa-linux, ia64-linux, lm32-elf, m32r-elf, m68k-linux,
mcore-elf, metag-elf, microblaze-linux, mips-linux, mmix, mn10300-elf,
nds32le-linux, nios2-linux, or1k-elf, powerpc64-linux, powerpc-linux,

x86: Support Intel IBT with IBT property and IBT-enable PLT
To support IBT in Intel Control-flow Enforcement Technology (CET) instructions: https://software.intel.com/sites/default/files/managed/4d/2a/control-flow-enforcement-technology-preview.pdf #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_FEATURE_1_AND 0xc0000002 #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_FEATURE_1_IBT (1U << 0) are added to GNU program properties to indicate that all executable sections are compatible with IBT when ENDBR instruction starts each valid target where an indirect branch instruction can land. GNU_PROPERTY_X86_FEATURE_1_IBT is set on output only if it is set on all relocatable inputs. The followings changes are made to the Procedure Linkage Table (PLT): 1. For 64-bit x86-64, PLT is changed to PLT0: push GOT[1] bnd jmp *GOT[2] nop ... PLTn: endbr64 push namen_reloc_index bnd jmp PLT0 together with the second PLT section: PLTn: endbr64 bnd jmp *GOT[namen_index] nop BND prefix is also added so that IBT-enabled PLT is compatible with MPX. 2. For 32-bit x86-64 (x32) and i386, PLT is changed to PLT0: push GOT[1] jmp *GOT[2] nop ... PLTn: endbr64 # endbr32 for i386. push namen_reloc_index jmp PLT0 together with the second PLT section: PLTn: endbr64 # endbr32 for i386. jmp *GOT[namen_index] nop BND prefix isn't used since MPX isn't supported on x32 and BND registers aren't used in parameter passing on i386. GOT is an array of addresses. Initially, GOT[namen_index] is filled with the address of the ENDBR instruction of the corresponding entry in the first PLT section. The function, namen, is called via the ENDBR instruction in the second PLT entry. [x86] Resolve non-PIC undefweak symbols in executable
For i386 and x86-64, non-PIC references to undefined weak symbols are resolved without dynamic relocation when creating executable. Resolved undefined weak symbols are removed from the dynamic symbol table in executable. One exception is on i386, we need resolved undefined weak symbols in the dynamic symbol table in PIE if input relocatable files contain branchs without PLT so that we can branch to 0 with dynamic relocation in text section. This makes behaviors of dynamic executable and position independent executable predictable with mixed PIC and non-PIC references to undefined weak symbols. Add "-z call-nop=PADDING" option to ld
The ld linker can transform indirect call to a locally defined function,
foo, via its GOT slot, to either "NOP call foo" or "call foo NOP" where
NOP is a 1-byte NOP padding. This patch adds a "-z call-nop=PADDING"
option to x86 ld to control 1-byte NOP padding for x86 call instruction.
PADDING is one of prefix-addr, prefix-nop, suffix-nop, prefix-NUMBER or
suffix-NUMBER.

Add -z noextern-protected-data to ld for ELF/x86
Address of protected data defined in the shared library may be external, i.e., due to copy relocation. By default, linker backend checks if relocations against protected data symbols are valid for building shared library and issues an error if relocation isn't allowed. Optimize out i386/x86-64 JUMP_SLOT relocation
When there are both PLT and GOT references to the same function symbol, linker will create a GOTPLT slot for PLT entry and a GOT slot for GOT reference. A run-time JUMP_SLOT relocation is created to update the GOTPLT slot and a run-time GLOB_DAT relocation is created to update the GOT slot. Both JUMP_SLOT and GLOB_DAT relocations will apply the same symbol value to GOTPLT and GOT slots, respectively, at run-time. This optimization combines GOTPLT and GOT slots into a single GOT slot and removes the run-time JUMP_SLOT relocation. It replaces the regular PLT entry: indirect jump [GOTPLT slot] push relocation index jump PLT0 with an GOT PLT entry with an indirect jump via the GOT slot: indirect jump [GOT slot] nop and resolves PLT reference to the GOT PLT entry. We must avoid this optimization if pointer equality is needed since we don't clear symbol value in this case and the dynamic linker won't update the GOT slot. Skip directories with LIBPATH_SUFFIX_SKIP suffix
On Linux/x86-64, when binutils is configured with --libdir=/usr/lib64,
genscripts.sh treats /usr/lib64 as the default search directory. It
puts /usr/lib64 in linker scripts for all emulations, like
